If Matt Rhule’s vision is built on “fourth-quarter grinders” and hard-nosed Big Ten football, the last three games of the season were a public contradiction. The Huskers were mauled at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, and in the Big Ten, that is a death sentence.

The fallout was swift and telling. Nebraska parted ways with its defensive coordinator and both line coaches, a clear acknowledgment that philosophical alignment without physical execution doesn’t win games. Rhule understands the modern reality of college football: this is a professionalized sport now, and if you’re not upgrading personnel and coaching simultaneously, you’re falling behind. Change was inevitable — and necessary.

The newest member of The Pipeline.@Brendan_Black51 is N. 🎈 pic.twitter.com/V2QVP5q8yD
— Nebraska Football (@HuskerFootball) January 7, 2026

Glass Half Full

There is a reasonable argument that Nebraska answered the bell this offseason, particularly on the offensive line. On paper, this group is unquestionably stronger. Day-one starters Brendan Black and Tree Babalade add immediate heft and experience, while Paul Mubenga brings legitimate competition at right guard. Depth and competition — two things Nebraska sorely lacked — are finally trending in the right direction.

The biggest difference, however, isn’t just who is blocking — it’s who is teaching them. Geep Wade arrives as a proven developer, having cut his teeth in run-heavy systems like Georgia Tech. Development has been the missing link for Nebraska’s offensive line for years, and Wade’s track record suggests this won’t just be a collection of bodies, but a coached unit.

Add Lonnie Teasley to the mix as an assistant with SEC recruiting chops, and suddenly Nebraska’s offensive line room looks functional, forward-thinking, and — dare we say — sustainable. That matters, especially with young talent waiting in the wings. Grant Brix, Sam Sledge, Gunnar Gotulla, and others represent a pipeline rather than a patch job. For once, the future appears to be aligning with the present.

Glass Half Empty

The defensive line is where optimism becomes far more cautious. They still have this final weekend to make a splash in the portal but it will be tough to move the needle.

Big Ten offenses exposed Nebraska late in the season by simply lining up and bullying them. Fans wanted — and frankly expected — a splash portal addition: a run-stuffing, double-team-eating nose tackle who could anchor the defense and change games by existing. None arrived.

Reality check: those players are unicorns. They don’t grow on trees, and they rarely hit the portal unless there’s a reason. Nebraska, instead, has opted to pivot schematically, moving toward a smaller four-man front designed to compensate for the absence of that mythical space-eater in the middle.

That doesn’t mean all is lost. Andy Burburija from Iowa Western could make an immediate impact — not by becoming an All-Big Ten force, but by raising the floor. Simply not being the worst defensive interior in the conference would be meaningful progress.

There is also hope through development. Riley Van Poppel, Cam Lenhardt, Williams Nwaneri, and Kade Pietrzak all benefit from additional offseason reps, strength gains, and coaching continuity. The question is whether “hope and development” can realistically hold up against the likes of Michigan, Ohio State, and the rest of the league’s grown men up front.

Right now, this feels less like a solved problem and more like a calculated gamble.

Iowa Western transfer DT Andy Burburija holds interest from a list of P4 programs including Auburn, Arkansas, Iowa State, Missouri, Penn State and Texas Tech, per his reps @youngbucksport.

Burburjia logged 78 total tackles (27.5 TFL) and 14 sacks in two seasons at Iowa Western. pic.twitter.com/LtcoYjVgoQ
— Eli Lederman (@ByEliLederman) January 3, 2026

Players Buying In

Perhaps the most encouraging sign of the portal window wasn’t who arrived — but who didn’t leave.

Nebraska avoided a mass exodus of meaningful contributors, a strong indicator that the locker room believes in the direction of the program. Buy-in matters. Stability matters. Rhule has been clear that he’s building something long-term, and players appear willing to ride through the growing pains.

College football history is littered with programs undone by instability. Wisconsin’s recent self-inflicted chaos is a cautionary tale, while Iowa continues its Groundhog Day existence of grinding out winning seasons through continuity and identity. Nebraska, for the first time in years, seems to be choosing the latter path.

Whether the beef added up front is enough remains the defining question. In the Big Ten, answers are earned in November, not on signing day. Nebraska has improved, no doubt — but improvement and adequacy are not the same thing.

We’re about to find out if this version of beef is finally Big Ten-approved.

Originally posted on Corn Nation.
